about

Drab Habit is a solo project by Dublin-born, London-based artist David Qadir. The first single from his upcoming EP, Glow, is a unique, uptempo fusion of Pearl Jam-inspired alt rock and Daft Punk-esque synth pop elements – difficult to place into a particular genre. Pre-release listener reaction has been extremely positive; Glow ranks in the 96th percentile of all tracks analysed by ReverbNation’s Crowd Review and Drab Habit is lined up to be a featured artist on ReverbNation in October 2018.

A self-taught guitarist first and foremost, Qadir’s early musical interest was firmly rooted in the Seattle grunge scene, with a sprinkling of 60s & 70s classic rock: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden & Stone Temple Pilots meets Hendrix & Led Zep. But, with age and through involvement in a variety of different projects, tastes broadened and he became increasingly interested in more diverse recording and production techniques. The first forays into self-production were heavily guitar-based arrangements, recorded on a trusty Boss BR900 8-track recorder, with which he still refuses to part. Nowadays, while a Gibson Les Paul and an Epiphone Sheraton II still take pride of place in his home studio, keyboards, synths and strings play a more prominent role in many of his compositions.

Drab Habit’s first EP, Epic, was the culmination of early explorations into recording with this wider range of tools and it was well-received by some:

There’s something beautiful and heroic about the violin, especially when heard in a track like “Epic.” It softens the almost ominous bassline and stabbing guitar riffs, with the echoed rim-shots giving this gesture a cinematic feel. It surely lives up to its title. – Too Much Love

In fact, there was a great deal of positive, constructive feedback received from bloggers in general (thank you all), which has played a part in shaping the soon-to-be-released follow-up EP, Progress. Built on a strong foundation of prog-rock, Progress ranges from spacey electronica to hindi-chill to orchestral soundtracks – feedback thus far has been overwhelmingly positive:

This is one of the best instrumental songs that I have recently heard and it is very soothing and calm to listen to. You really have a lot of talent and I hope to hear more from you soon! – ReverbNation crowd reviewer
